"Bob Van Breda: Objects", exhibition of new sculptures opens at Heather James Fine Art
Bob Van Breda, Houses. Nickel plated steel, 29 x 13 1/2 x 7 in. Executed in 2012.
JACKSON, WY.- Heather James Fine Art presents new sculptures by artist Bob Van Breda.

Bob Van Breda creates distinctive work from multiple mediums that explore the often overlooked and mundane articles of everyday existence. Works from his Objects series consist of metal plated found items turned into sculptural objects that focus on the inherent beauty of form thus expanding the dialogue of what was once considered strictly functional. Highlights of the exhibition include an enlarged set of houses from the game Monopoly cast in nickel plated steel and a folded polished stainless steel paper airplane.

Discussing the origins of the Objects series the artist states, “two rather dirty, tarnished truck springs were found in a cow field behind the house I rented while in architecture school at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California. I brought both of them into the house, washed off the dirt and cleaned them up. What compelled me about these springs was the spiral shape and round bar stock from which they were forged. Contemplating this “stock” and “shape” further, I wondered what the springs would look like if I were to change the surface material and chrome plate them. I had the springs polished and plated. When completed these springs seemed to transcend into a new vibrant shape. The round bar stock reflecting the surroundings in a surrealistic way and spiral shape that at times reflected itself seemed to create movement, while the piece was in fact static.”

Bob Van Breda received his degree in Architecture from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and his Bachelor of Fine Art from California State University-Los Angeles. He has exhibited nationally with recent exhibitions at Electric Works, San Francisco, CA and Heather James Fine Art, Palm Desert, CA.
