ROCHESTER, N.Y.- Witness history as photographer and musician Graham Nash receives the title of George Eastman Honorary Scholar, and discusses his career and the Taking Aim exhibition, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 in the Dryden.

Nash is being honored for his contribution to photography as an artist and innovator. Past recipients of this title include Dennis Hopper and Jeff Bridges.

While best known for his legendary music career with Crosby, Stills, and Nash as well as The Hollies – and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for each band – he has been taking pictures for more than 50 years and collecting photographs since the 1970s. His passion for fine-art photography led him to establish Nash Editions, a pioneering and celebrated printmaking studio that produces state-of-the art digital images for a long list of master photographers and artists.

Eastman House presented the world premiere of Nash Editions’ Digital Frontiers exhibition in 1998, with Nash visiting the museum to assist with the launch of the exhibition, which Eastman House toured internationally for five years.

“George Eastman House is like the Woodstock of photography,” Nash told the press when he last visited the Museum. “The Eastman House has a vast collection of photographic treasures, but also is on top of what’s going on in the contemporary world of photography. It’s truly a fascinating place that I’ve used as a resource for many years.”

Nash’s photographs have appeared in numerous exhibitions, including the exhibition on view at Eastman House through Jan. 30 — Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash — of which there is a book by the same title.

For Nash, Taking Aim isn't merely documentation of rock stars and performances, but rather rock ‘n' roll's continuation. "We're musicians and we want to communicate," Nash said, "and that's what I'm trying to do with this book and exhibition; I'm trying to communicate a certain thing about rock 'n' roll that people instinctively recognize. Just look at the words ‘rock 'n' roll' — what a great bit of energy in the words themselves."

Nash’s music spans 40 years and has served as a voice of a generation, including classic songs he penned, like "Our House” and “Teach Your Children.”

For services to music and charitable activities, the British-born superstar received in June 2010 the Order of the British Empire by the Queen of England. And for pioneering work in photography, The Smithsonian Institution cited Nash Editions for its role in the invention of digital fine-art printing upon acquiring the company’s original equipment and ephemera in 2005.
