STOCKHOLM (AP).- A bomb threat closed Stockholm's modern art museum on Tuesday, two days after an exhibit about degrading stereotypes that black people have endured prompted one Swedish organization to demand that the nation's culture minister resign. No bomb was found while the museum was evacuated for several hours, and it was not clear who had made the threat or whether it was connected with the exhibit. Police spokeswoman Lotta Goffhe said a bomb squad searched the Moderna Museet in Stockholm after officers in the southern city of Malmo received the threat in a telephone call from a man who spoke in English. On Sunday, Culture Minister Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth participated in an event at the museum that involved several cakes designed by artists, including one in the shape of the naked torso of a black woman. ... ZURICH.- From 17 April to 16 December 2012 the Kunsthaus Zürich will be exhibiting six bronze sculptures and a terracotta figure by Aristide Maillol which have been restored over the last twelve months. Alongside Auguste Rodin, Maillol is considered the most important French sculptor of the early modern era. Now, for the first time, the works of the two artists are to be exhibited together in a group of around a dozen pieces from the Kunsthaus collection. The Kunsthaus Zürich holds seven works by Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) together with Auguste Rodin one of the leading bronze sculptors of the transition from the 19th century to the modern era covering almost all periods of his career. Maillols work is characterized by rounded forms, compact surfaces and classical poses informed by a sensually Mediterranean vision of woman. SAINT PETERSBURG.- Rosphoto introduces to audience the work of Franco Fontana, one of the most outstanding masters of contemporary art photography in Italy. Fontana's style was shaped in the late 1960s under the influence of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. In that his teachers were his older conpemporaries, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Ed Reinhardt. Fontana's work with its focus on form and colour was quite different from the classical black-and-white art photography that was predominant at that time. Franco Fontana's images of rural and urban landscapes are notable for their strict geometric composition and expressive colour. He says, ''I try to isolate in space and time all that is normally mixed up with an inifinity of details. Extracting a few essential elements from the entirety that presents itself ... More |

CHANTILLY, VA (AP).- The space shuttle Discovery went out in high-flying style. After three spectacular spins above the nation's capital, the world's most traveled spaceship completed its final flight and was ready to become a grounded museum relic. But what an exit. Discovery took victory laps around the White House, the Capitol and the Washington Monument that elicited cheers and awe the same sounds and emotions that used to accompany every thunderous launch. Bolted to the top of a modified jumbo jet, the shuttle took off at daybreak Tuesday from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Three hours later, the combo took a few final swoops around Washington at an easy-to-spot 1,500-foot altitude. "It was pretty amazing," said 12-year-old Riley Jacobsen of Bethesda, Md. "Pretty freaking crazy. It looked like it was inflated." Sorena Sorenson, a geology ... More |

Jamie Shovlin, 2011-12. Needham by George Steiner (Variation 3A). Acrylic on canvas, 210 x 130 cm. Photo: Courtesy Haunch of Venison.
LONDON.- Haunch of Venison presents Various Arrangements an exhibition of new works by British artist Jamie Shovlin. This exhibition will present a series of seventeen new large-scale paintings based on the cover designs of the Fontana Modern Masters series, a set of pocket guides published in the 1970s on eminent writers, philosophers and thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka and Marcel Proust. The paintings in this exhibition represent titles that were scheduled for publication but for unknown reasons did not appear. Driven by a fascination of the ambition and appearance of the Fontana series, and a longstanding interest in typography and graphic design, Shovlin devised a system - set out in a colour wheel - that would allow him to produce paintings of each of these unpublished and unknown book covers. In the first gallery space the exhibition reveals the methodology Shovlin used to produce the paintings with a dis ... More |

$412 check that bought Superman sold for $160,000
PHILADELPHIA (AP).- The $412 check that DC Comics wrote to acquire Superman and other creative works by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster has sold for $160,000 in an online auction. Stephen Fishler, chief executive of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Collectibles in New York, said Tuesday that the 1938 check was auctioned online to an unnamed buyer. The check was made out to Siegel and Shuster and deposited. It includes a line item for $130 showing DC paid for full ownership and rights to Superman. Siegel and Shuster created Superman together while teenagers in Cleveland, Ohio, in the early 1930s. His first appearance was in "Action Comics" No. 1 in April 1938. NEW YORK (AP).- A New York auction house has sold an original ticket to the 1912 launch of the Titanic and a dinner menu from the ill-fated ocean liner, plus items recovered from the wreckage miles underwater. The menu, touting choices like Surrey capon and ox tongue and beef sirloin with horseradish, sold for $31,250. Both went to private American buyers, said Gregg Dietrich, Bonhams' maritime consultant. He said one surprise at the auction was the comparatively low price paid for a telegraph that read, "We have struck an iceberg."
